Comments

A personal high clearance 4x4 vehicle with a spare tire and extra gasoline is mandatory for this trip.

The Toroweap region of Grand Canyon National Park is an extremely remote and rugged part of the park. Access is 2-3 hours from the last paved road on secondary dirt and gravel roads that are rarely graded leaving them in generally fair to poor condition. All supplies including food, water, gear, and gasoline must be brought in because there are no services available. There is no cell phone coverage and advanced medical care is hours away.

Average highs are 60 degrees and average lows are 30 degrees. Come prepared for any type of weather including rain, snow, wind, or summer heat. March is an extremely unpredictable time at the Grand Canyon .

There may be a very limited amount of camping gear including tents and sleeping bags available from the park. If you need gear please call ahead to confirm availability.

Vegetation Program Volunteer Days at Toroweap: March 24-30, 2010

Overview

The Toroweap Campground, our home base for this exciting Vegetation Program trip, is perched 3,000 feet above the Colorado River. Nestled under Vulcon's Throne, Toroweap Lake was once a seasonal home for ranchers and cattle. We will be continuing our project to remove Tumble mustard (Jim Hill mustard) from this dry lake bed in addition to working on other invasive species control in the campground and a special project. We will work each day from 8 AM to 4 PM with a one hour break for lunch. In addition to working side by side with you, Vegetation Program staff will present an orientation to Grand Canyon National Park and the Toroweap Region, the park's native vegetation communities, and a short overview of some of the invasive species that are being managed by park biologists. Please come out and join us for a unique opportunity to assist the Vegetation Program in a spectacular and seldom visited part of Grand Canyon National Park.

We will be meeting outside of the BLM Field Office in Kanab , Utah and carpooling into the Toroweap Region.

Meeting location:
BLM Kanab Field Office, 318 North 100 East - Kanab , Utah 84741
