National Public lands day: Kane Native Plant Garden and public lands restoration: september 27–30, 2012

Overview

This week we will participate in two projects: building a native plant demonstration garden at a historic ranch house, and celebrating National Public Lands Day by participating in another restoration project on public lands in House Rock Valley.

The mission of the Kane and Two Mile Ranch Program is to restore and maintain the ecological and scenic integrity of the 850,000 acre Kane and Two Mile Ranches, which shares a 110 mile border with the northern edge of Grand Canyon National Park. Livestock overgrazing, water development, old-growth logging, fire suppression and other land use practices have degraded large tracts of the Kane and Two Mile ranches, and the Trust is committed to working collaboratively with land management agencies to restore and sustainably manage this unique landscape.

In spring 2010 the Grand Canyon Trust began construction on a native plant garden at the Kane Ranch headquarters. The ranch is situated in the spectacular House Rock Valley and has been owned by the Trust since 2005. The garden will enable visitors to see and learn about the region’s native plant species. It will also exemplify a stewardship aesthetic. The work will include installing irrigation, soil amendment, seeding and planting.

To celebrate National Public Lands Day on September 29, we are in the midst of putting together another restoration oriented project in beautiful House Rock Valley in partnership with the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). Stay tuned!
